This content was created in collaboration with an Occupational Therapist with many years’ experience in supporting self-care skills for children with a range of disabilities.

Many educators have requested support to understand why a child may be delayed in their ability to use the toilet independently.

We consider the steps to readiness for all children, and then explore why children with sensory differences, movement challenges and a range of disabilities may need more support.

The initial presentation is coupled with discussion specific to your centre, toileting spaces and routines, and cohort of children.

This approach to early childhood toileting allows educators to consider the individual child alongside the toileting spaces and routines within their setting. It also provides practical professional learning for educators seeking to better understand toilet training and the factors that can influence a child’s readiness and independence.
